Manager, Reporting and Analysis

What is the opportunity?

The Credit Provision Analysis and Measurement (CPAM) team provides Senior Management within Risk Management, Finance, Business units (including: Capital Markets, Canadian Banking, I&TS, Wealth Management, Insurance, and legal entities) and Investor Relations with expert analysis and guidance on the Banks allowance for credit loss (ACL) and provisions for credit losses (PCL).  

Team also provides support for the review & analysis of RBC’s Enterprise Wide Stress Testing (EWST) results that are used in Board level risk appetite statements.

The Manager, Reporting and Analysis will be reengineering the reporting processes to generate efficiencies and reduce operational risks. As the subject matter expert on ACL/PCL for performing loans and EWST data, you will be interacting with model implementation teams to understand the data lineage for ACL/PCL and EWST calculations.

What will you do?

  • Assist in maintaining reporting infrastructure for the analysis of IFRS9 allowances/ EWST (Enterprise Wide Stress Testing)
  • Assist in the timely production of the Allowance Committee decks that are critical for the approval of the allowances by the Committee. The reported numbers have a direct impact on the balance sheet and the income statements of every business line across RBC
  • Assist in the timely production of the credit provisions results, to be incorporated into EWST and STEG (Stress Testing Executive Group) decks for the presentation to the RBC Board of Directors. Results are used to evaluate RBC against its risk appetite and articulate what drives Enterprise wide stress limit calibration
  • Continuously review and streamline current reporting processes and explore new technology for the enhancement
  • Build reports for CPAM (Credit Provisioning Analysis and Measurement) and ST members to support various mandates in the team (Retail & Wholesale portfolio analysis, Macroeconomics and Scenario design). This requires a deep understanding of critical data elements that will be needed to support various portfolios covered in the team
  • Support and/or execute tasks within CPAM’s and the ST’s coverage such as allowance forecasting, PCL (Provision Credit Loss) decomposition, non-modelled ACL (Allowance for Credit Loss) calculations, macro sensitivity and trend analysis as well as similar metrics for stress testing
  • Drive analysis to support ad-hoc requests and meet tight deadlines around month-end, quarter-end and annual cycles.  Anticipate and be able to answer substantive questions relating to the work of their team
  • Maintain up to date documentation for auditors and internal use.  Comply with all bank policies including SOX controls as appropriate

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have:

  • Strong understanding of data management and data warehousing, and strong technical skills (Python, SAS and SQL are preferred)
  • Solid understanding of banking and risk (wholesale and/or retail credit), with cross-functional capability.  Minimum 1 year of work experience in risk management or finance of a bank, preferably with AIRB approach, or of a financial institution
  • University degree in technical or quantitative fields such as Statistics, Mathematics or Computer Sciences
  • Strong ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, complex concepts in non-technical terms to business segment Finance and senior business segment leaders
  • A thorough understanding of relevant accounting and regulatory rules and requirements (IFRS 9, Basel)

Nice-to-have: 

  • Professional designation in Accounting, Finance or Risk Management e.g. CPA, CFA, or FRM etc.
  • Demonstrated self-starter and leader who can tailor analysis to required level of precision
  • Works well with cross-functional teams (Risk, Finance), demonstrating strong teamwork, coordination, and people skills
  • Quick learner with outstanding conceptual, analytical, and problem solving skills, with an ability to work towards challenging deadlines and deliver under pressure
