Senior Compliance Officer, Global Compliance, Investment Management

Asset Management Compliance supports business entities such as 1832 Asset Management L.P. (“1832”), MD Financial Management Inc. (“MD”), Jarislowsky Fraser Limited (“JFL”) and Tangerine Investment Management Inc (“TIMI”).  These entities provide portfolio management services for Investment Funds, Pooled Funds and institutional clients. The Asset Management Compliance Department provides pre trade and post trade trading and portfolio management compliance oversight. The incumbent is responsible for assisting the Asset Management Compliance Department with this oversight, specifically with regards to JFL, with a special focus on the investment constraints governing the portfolio management and trading activities of the accounts managed by JFL. The incumbent will work closely with the Senior Manager, Asset Management Compliance to monitor JFL Compliance Program using Advent (Order Management System) and assist with department special projects as required.




  • Investigates and resolves trading and portfolio management compliance breaches arising from pre trade and post trade reviews. Review and investigate trading compliance violations as they occur and provide an appropriate response in order to promptly execute the trade(s).
  • In the conduct of all activities, pro-actively identifies actual and potential violations of regulatory requirements, internal policies and procedures, and/or other high risk situations in a timely manner to mitigate business and operational risk.
  • Conducts appropriate inquiries and investigations in relation to any such situation and ensures that appropriate corrective actions and/or risk mitigation actions are implemented in a timely manner or escalated.
  • Reviews new mandates to ensure investment constraints and requirements have been identified and are controlled for on Advent.
  • Proactively works with members of the Asset Management Compliance team to identify lacking and/or non-effective compliance controls including the development of new Advent Compliance controls and manual compliance oversight processes.
  • Develop and maintain a trusted advisor and commercial relationship with Senior Management and other stakeholders (such as Portfolio Manager, Traders, Legal, Operations and Product) through the delivery of consistent, timely, practical and accurate guidance and advice to the business.
  • The incumbent will use his/her analytical skills to conduct relevant research and arrive at conclusions and/or recommendations based on the exercise of good judgment on moderately complex decisions falling within standard policies; and escalate matters beyond existing policies.
  • Responsible for the creation and maintenance of the JFL Funds and Client Accounts Constraint Rule Library with the goal of ensuring all fund and client constraints are properly identified and documented. Works with the team members to ensure all identified constraints are controlled for within the electronic trading surveillance system.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the investment strategies employed by JFL and assists in ensuring the strategies are controlled for within the electronic trading surveillance system.
  • Assists in identifying gaps in the existing compliance program and participates in developing, maintaining, and implementing changes to the firm’s compliance policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a high level of awareness of compliance related changes and developments in the securities industry through review of publications, participation in industry associations, employee development initiatives, etc.
  • Participate in special Compliance projects, as required and prepares and coordinates Compliance management reports.
  • Other duties and projects as may be assigned from time to time.


Education / Experience


  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in the financial services industry, preferably within a mutual fund company.
  • College Diploma or University Degree.
  • Key areas of regulatory knowledge include; National Instrument 81-102, National Instrument 81-107, Ontario Securities Act (Part XXI), and the Investment Advisors Act of 1940 (US).
  • Securities Industry Courses (CSI) such as Canadian Securities Course, derivative fundamental course or options course or Securities Industry Designations (CIM, CFA) are an asset.
  • Experience in Advent Compliance Module programming and compliance test set-up is an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel is a must.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.
  • Focused, results-oriented individual with the strong ability to multi-task and perform under pressure in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
