Senior Manager, Ethnographer


This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted November 4, 2020.

What is the opportunity?

Do you have proven experience conducting ethnographic research, a passion for helping people and the ability to communicate abstract insights to sr. management?  If so we want to hear from you!

RBC is recruiting for an experienced Ethnographer. In this role you will conduct research using the most innovative and methods to discover and define the needs (known and unknown) of consumers, clients, communities and employees and RBC’s opportunities in addressing these needs.  


What will you do?

  • Designing, conducting & reporting on qualitative research at the front end of Design Thinking Process to surface deep consumer need with the end goal of supporting business growth.
  • Collaborating with designers, strategists, technologists and others to effectively understand and define business problems, translate them into research needs and propose most appropriate recommendations for the qualitative research.
  • Direct ownership and responsibility for the execution of the qualitative research
  • Leverage knowledge from a team of data and client insights experts to uncover better insights by bringing in multiple information sources.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to signal market trends, identify business opportunities & emerging market segments, and relevant positioning, value proposition and potential product development/ enhancements
  • Test and learn new and innovative methodology to achieve the highest standard in research excellence.
  • Continually audit current methodologies and research potential enhancements to drive deeper insights for the enterprise. 


What do you need to succeed?


  • Proven experience (minimum of 5 years) in leading and conducting ethnographic research projects for businesses
  • Master’s/PhD in anthropology, sociology or other social science discipline
  • Superior ability to clearly communicate research insights for non-researchers
  • Superior knowledge and practical experience on a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research techniques
  • Innovative thinker with proven experience to demonstrate outside of the box thinking
  • Excellent ability to decide on the most appropriate research methodologies that aligns best to Research Objective



  • Fluency in French and/or another language(s) is a major asset.
  • Previous experience in financial services research is an asset.
  • Prior experience doing research in a client service environment, either with an agency or consultancy is preferred.
