Student Analyst, Economic Research (Summer 2021 4-month Term)

OMERS Capital Markets manages the public markets investment portfolio consisting of fixed income (including government bonds, Inflation-Linked Bonds and public and private credit) and equities, including global public equities, intellectual property and structured investments. The team’s approach is focused on generating current income from high-quality assets and generating a consistent capital return with a lower volatility than the broad markets. We also seek to develop strategic partnerships with best-in-class investors to access credit and other opportunities on a global basis. The OMERS Capital Markets’ team is distinguished by its diversity in expertise and experience and its commitment to reliable, lower-risk performance. Our objective is to construct a well-diversified portfolio that will deliver long-term annualized returns in the 6 to 9% range.

As a member of this team, you will be responsible for:

Within the framework of authorized policies, approved budgets and operating goals:
• Maintain databases, PowerPoint presentations, and analytical tools
• Monitor, analyze and produce research on economic and financial developments
• Assist in the preparation of internal and external reports, including collecting, organizing and analyzing information from a variety of sources
• Provide research assistance as needed to Economic Research team
• Responsible for two regular outputs: the weekly COVID-19 Monitor and the bi-weekly Market Movers package
• Ad hoc research projects

To succeed in this role, you have:

• Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Economics or Business
• Knowledge of economics and understanding of the financial sector
• Experience using Bloomberg and Microsoft Office
• Experience working in a research assistant role
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
• Self-starter with ability to work constructively within a team and perform effectively in periodic, higher pressure situations.
