What can you expect in this role?

The TL, Litigation Support, manages the staffing, scheduling and administrative oversight of legal support staff in the Claims Litigation Unit (CLU) within the Legal Department and supports the Manager, Litigation Support in the recruitment of the legal support staff. The TL oversees the quality of the Support Staff’s work but is not expected to audit/review the work. TLs will be responsible for scheduling, providing coaching and guidance to teams of Clerks and Assistants including regular cadence of touchpoints and providing back up support to Lawyers when vacancies and/or vacations occur. The TLs will be required to implement standardized strategies and practices throughout their team members that are developed and managed by the Manager, Litigation Support.      

  • Oversee staffing and scheduling of team to ensure adequate coverage to support claims litigation lawyers (e.g. vacations, leaves of absence), including ensuring workloads/lawyer-support ratios reflect appropriate balance and expectations for support staff; and support the Manager, Litigation Support in the recruitment of legal support staff            
  • Set and monitor performance objectives for legal support staff; seek input/feedback from supported lawyers and conduct performance reviews 
  • Manage and mediate any issues among support staff and with lawyers; interact with Counsel, Claims Litigation and Claims Litigation, Team Leads regarding potential concerns/issues to be addressed
  • Manage mentoring/coaching of legal support staff
  • Support evaluation of legal support processes and file organization practices for the Claims Litigation Unit
  • Create and support a positive work environment for legal support staff within the Claims Litigation Unit, and Legal Department as a whole                                                                                                                                

What do you bring to the role?

  • 4+ years’ experience as an Assistant or Clerk with a proven capacity to mentor or informally lead others within a team
  • Possess a Univ. /Coll./CIP, Legal Assistant Diploma and/or Law Clerk designation
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, including conflict resolution     
  • Highly organized and good written communications
  • Leadership competencies
