Director, Distribution Lines

General Accountabilities:

  • Manage strategic support to the Vice President, Distribution in implementing the Distribution Lines goals/objectives/strategies by providing effective support and direction to the Distribution Lines Organization in the execution of work.
  • Drive and support the corporate strategy in becoming the safest and most efficient utility.
  • Provide leadership for an organization accountable for Distribution Lines.
  • Develop strategies, plans to carry out the maintenance of our assets and systems while identifying opportunities & efficiencies.
  • Liaise and develop strong working relationships with Labour Unions.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills, coupled with expert knowledge of the power system.
  • Must be a team-player and capable of leading a large team of managerial, professional, technical, and field staff.

 

Specific Accountabilities:
Through collateral relationships with several peers across the company, including but not limited to Director – Distribution Work Management, Director – Distribution Operations Management, Director – Forestry Services, Director – Health & Safety, etc. and within context provided by the VP Distribution, you will implement strategies, plans and support the development of Distribution Lines pertaining to assets and systems while identifying opportunities efficiencies, compliance, performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc. you will:

  • Provide input and details on the Distribution Lines strategies and plans to lead the strategies that support of the preparation of the 1 to 5 year Investment Plan and multi- year work program.
  • Develop annual work program with the necessary reporting requirements to implement the approved Investment Plan.
  • Define 3-5 year resourcing requirements and the mix of resources keeping in mind the labour agreements and a robust succession plan for key positions.
  • Manage work program activities for timeliness, cost control, completeness and quality.
  • Monitor and report the businesses’ financial performance against plan and initiative required corrective actions, as necessary.
  • Ensure Hydro One has adequate, timely and accurate business information to support planning, regulatory and performance monitoring activities.
  • Implement and support new technology in support of Distribution Lines work program activities.
  • With support of HR & LR, provide advice and guidance to Superintendents on collective agreements, work assignments, discipline, layoffs, transfers, grievance & arbitration, etc.
  • Participate in bargaining agenda items and teams for various collective agreements.
  • Manage appropriate systems in place to meet due diligence requirements related to work program activities including control and audit functions.
  • Factor in improvements to customer satisfaction with the execution for the various Distribution Lines groups.

 
Managerial Accountabilities:

  • Set the appropriate context for subordinate managers (i.e., Hydro One and Distribution Lines strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.).
  • Set an effective framework of policies and procedures for the work program.
  • Know and ensure own and subordinates’ compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements and all corporate policies and procedures and generally accepted practices relating to the work of the businesses.
  • Establish a two-way working relationship with subordinates to solicit their views on conditions and potential changes affecting their work and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain a team of subordinates who are capable of producing the outputs required:
  • Ensure subordinates are able and willing to produce the desired outputs and that subordinate managers continually improve the processes for achieving outputs.
  • Assess staff capability to do the required work, now and in the future.
  • Conduct personal effectiveness reviews of subordinate managers/specialists to build relationships and trust and to improve effectiveness.
  • Mentor and counsel subordinates – once-removed.
  • Provide leadership to subordinates, so that they collaborate competently and with full commitment, with each other in pursuing the goals set.
  • Translate the Hydro One and Distribution Lines goals and objectives into a direction which guides the operation of the business and communicate that direction to all staff.
  • Define specific tasks for subordinates, which are required to achieve desired results and/or to accommodate changes required within the business operations.
  • Providing a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Provide subordinates with appropriate knowledge, skills, information, work procedures and equipment to facilitate responsible behaviour which will protect their safety and contribute to their health.
  • Provide a work environment and facilities where health and safety incidents are minimized and employees contribute without the fear of reprisals.
  • Provide a work environment that supports and values diversity, and is free from harassment.
  • Know and ensure subordinates comply with all legal and regulatory requirements, corporate policies and procedures and generally accepted practices relating to their work.
  • Demonstrate stewardship of the assets and resources.
  • Ensure every reasonable precaution is taken for the protection of subordinates, the environment and the assets.
  • Provide for security of human and physical resources including information.

 
Selection Criteria:

  • Expert knowledge of the Utility Industry/Business and associated management requirements.
  • Experience: 5-7 of years of experience at the Sr. Manager, Director, etc. level or equivalent
  • Demonstrated Management Skills, including but not limited to:
    • Safety Awareness – ability to champion safety initiatives and safe work practices.
    • Team leadership – ability to take a role as leader of a team or other groups.
    • Strategic business thinking – ability to apply technical knowledge and experience to make management decisions for achieving business objectives.
