Registered Nurse – ICU Extender

The Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph’s Health Centre has a new and exciting RN Extender opportunity! As part of our COVID-19 pandemic plan, the organization is anticipating an increase in the number of patients being admitted to the ICU requiring ventilator support. As a result, we are going to incorporate this new and creative staffing approach to assist with care for ICU patients, especially during times of increased patient census and staff shortages. RN Extenders only work under the supervision of a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN). RN Extenders are intended to care for ICU patients within a team-based nursing model also known as an “ICU POD” – with additional supports including a Respiratory Therapist, Physiotherapist and Health Care Attendants.       

Qualifications include:

1. Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
2. Minimum 2 years recent Medical/Surgical Experience required. (Candidates with less than 2 years of experience may be considered if there are no qualified internal or external applicants).
3. Physical Assessment, Coronary Care 1, Respiratory Care 1 and/or Nephrology 1 (minimum 1 course preferred).
4. Current BLS Certificate required.
5. ACLS issued by the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a program recognized by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, required within 6 months of hire.
6. Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate within an interprofessional team
8. Must be able to deal effectively with patients and family members in crisis situations
9. Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.
10. Ability to be well organized and flexible
11. Excellent computer skills
12. Must be able to apply critical care skills with training and CCRN supervision
13. Must be able to assist CCRN and be delegated to perform additional critical care skills under the direct supervision of the CCRN
14. Satisfactory attendance record.
