Position:  Registered Nurse – 2 Positions 
Site:  Toronto General Hospital

Department:  Otolaryngology – Head And Neck Surgery/Plastics Unit – 6B MUNK
Reports to:  Nurse Manager
Scale/Grade:  E0 06
Salary Range:  $33.56 – $48.05 per hour (Start rate determined in accordance with collective agreement requirements)
Hours:  37.50 hours per week; Days/Nights/Weekends
Status:  Permanent Full-time

The University Health Network (UHN) represents the coming together of shared values and diverse expertise in patient care, research and teaching. Each of our facilities (Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto Rehabilitation Centre) makes a unique contribution to the whole. Together, we create something far greater than the sum of our parts.

This inpatient unit is one the largest head and neck & plastics program in the country. As part of the surgical oncology program, we also care for patients having gyne/oncology and urology surgery. We have 4 step-down beds on the unit for closer observation and monitoring.

Our strong inter-professional team cares for patients recovering from major and minor head and neck and plastic resections /reconstructions. Nurses on this unit are experts in airway management, flap monitoring, leech therapy and psychosocial assessments and support.

The program focuses on cancers affecting:

  • Oral Cavity (Lip and mouth)
  • Larynx
  • Pharynx (nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx)
  • Salivary glands
  • Nasal Cavities and sinuses
  • Thyroid & upper traches
  • Breast requiring reconstruction
  • Skin (melanoma/basal cell)
  • Other Head and Neck Malignancies

As a member of the UHN and the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team, the REGISTERED NURSE practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.  The principal responsibilities include: applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN.

Qualifications:

  • BScN preferred
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S) certification
  • Previous experience in E.N.T. and plastic surgery
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be flexible, and possess the ability to work effectively and efficiently within a variety of patient care teams
  • Excellent organizational, time management and decision making skills
  • Completion of B.Sc.N. preferred
  • Computer literacy an asset
