Research Assistant I – Critical Care Research

St. Michael's Hospital - Unity Health Toronto

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted November 6, 2020.

Dr. Karen Burns (Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit) is currently looking for a Research Assistant I to assist with completing follow-up questionnaires (quality of life, functional status) via telephone with study participants in a multicenter, North American weaning trial. In this trial, we are evaluating strategies to remove patients from ventilators.

Questionnaires will be administered to survivors or their substitute decision makers, 6 months after patients were enrolled in the trial. Follow-up telephone calls with patients or their substitute decision makers may occur after normal business hours.

Candidates will be expected to organize a time to conduct the interviews, administer two questionnaires by telephone (in English and French), collate, and record responses (data) and prepare summary and progress reports. Candidates must complete mandatory research training modules (GCP, TCPS2) and specific training related to the questionnaires that will be administered.

The ideal candidate for this position is highly motivated, organized, can work independently and is bilingual. Interviews will be conducted in both English and French.

The Research Assistant will report directly to the Dr. Karen Burns (Principal Investigator) and Ms. Leena Rizvi (Project Manager).

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Train on questionnaire administration
  • Coordinate and conduct telephone interviews with study participants or their substitute decision makers
  • Collect and enter data from phone interview
  • Monitor progress and provide updates on project related activities to the PI and Project Manager

Qualifications:

  • Basic computer skills, particularly database, spreadsheet and word processing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and scientific terminology
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills are necessary
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
  • Able to keep written records
  • Must be bilingual in English and French
  • Able to understand written and verbal directions
