Position Overview:

The primary role of the Screener is to greet, screen for signs and symptoms of illness, and assess eligibility for entrance to the Hospital, of all patients, caregivers, visitors, staff, and physicians utilizing the screening tools provided. This also includes ensuring policies for visitor restrictions are followed and verifying visitors/companions who are permitted to enter the hospital.

The primary function of Courtesy Services is to safely escort outpatients by wheelchair to appointments, to provide directions, assist with way-finding and problem solve for those who require additional assistance to get to their appointment.


1. Responsible for reviewing and understanding all current information relevant to screening requirements, including but not limited to information bulletins and infection control measures.

· At the beginning of every shift, review and read all bulletins and screening questions, and seek clarity where necessary to ensure current requirements are understood

2. Deliver prompt, accurate, professional, & courteous screening, information, directions to all internal and external clients including, patients, families, visitors and couriers, staff, physicians- this includes: .

· Prepare greeting stations/ areas as needed, including ensuring sufficient supplies

· Greet Internal and external customers in a courteous, professional and sensitive manner and disseminate information in a compassionate yet firm manner

· Verify eligibility for entrance by providing Visitor Pass sticker, screen for symptoms, and refer individuals for additional screening if required, to proper assessment areas

· Inform internal/external clients of all safety and infection control measures, as well as visitor restrictions.

· Perform screening duties as needed in a safe, sensitive yet firm manner including: hand sanitizing; distribute proper infection control equipment is distributed and worn; screening questions;

3. Escort patients in wheelchairs to various clinic appointments and doctors’ offices.

4. Provide directions, information and assistance as required utilizing tools and resources provided – may include: determine /verify location of patient appointment; liaise with hospital staff to determine patient/visitor/staff information needs.

5. Facilitate communication between patients, and waiting family members, staff.

6. Comfortable working with diverse population of patients/caregivers including seniors, those with physical and/or cognitive limitations, language barriers, etc. especially during this time of COVID-19 and “visitor restrictions”

7. Follow proper Infection prevention control protocols and policies, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper cleaning of equipment (e.g. wheelchairs), work spaces.

8. Ability to be flexible, prioritize and to provide support where needed based on: pedestrian flow, line ups, patients with additional needs – e.g. directing flow, screening, escorting, responding to inquiries, deescalating, etc.

9. Maintain knowledge of hospital amenities and services in order to respond to patient/visitor inquiries.

10. This is an evolving role which may require changes in duties depending on needs of hospital; other screening, contact and information duties as assigned


· Completed at least one year of a college or university program, preferred

· High school diploma, required

· Excellent Customer Service and Communication skills in a busy environment with multiple and competing needs

· Ability to maintain a polite & courteous manner in stressful situations

· Ability to communicate and give instructions in a clear authoritative manner

· Ability to deal with upset/ emotional internal and external clients

· Able to stand for long periods, push wheelchairs and walk long distances.

· Flexibility to adapt to changing needs at busy hospital entrance and other areas as required.

· Team player who is able to take direction

· Demonstrated initiative, and self -starter.
