Staff Scientist and Director, Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science (KRCBS)

St. Michael's Hospital - Unity Health Toronto

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted November 3, 2020.

Research at Unity Health Toronto is comprised of two major components: the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science (KRCBS) focusing on basic science and translational research, and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute (LKSKI) focusing on clinical, population health and health services research. KRCBS and LKSKI are located at St. Michael’s Hospital, known for its culture and community – a place where researchers can find support and grow in their careers. We are fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, the largest research entity in Canada.

The Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science is located in a state-of-the-art research facility containing outstanding core facilities accessible to all Keenan scientists. The KRCBS’ mission is to generate new knowledge relating to fundamental mechanisms of organ dysfunction with a major focus on translation into patients. With ~60 core researchers, KRCBS targets common and high burden illnesses that are important to patients and strive to make discoveries that will improve patients’ lives. The successful candidate will be a Scientist who is expected to establish and lead an innovative, competitive and independently-funded, internationally recognized, basic science research program relevant to the priorities of the KRCBS which include critical illness & injury, cardiovascular disease & diabetes, neurosciences, trauma, hematology & immunology. The successful candidate will spend approximately 75% of their time per week as a Scientist. Preferred candidates will have a record of excellence in scholarly research and training, including research funding, peer-reviewed publications, program development, collaborations with national and international organizations, and supervision of graduate students and fellows.

The successful candidate will also spend approximately 25% of their time per week as Director of the KRCBS.  The Director will lead the KRCBS to foster innovative, impactful and transformative science that aligns with the priorities, missions and values of Unity Health Toronto.

Scientist Qualifications:

  • Hold a PhD or an MD
  • Eligible to hold a full-time clinical academic appointment or a Status Only (PhD Scientist) appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Over 10 years of experience leading an independent and internationally recognized research program
  • Demonstrated track record of securing high profile research funding (including peer reviewed and international grants)
  • Experience in and a strong commitment to supervision of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research staff
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, establish and foster collaborations with other basic and/or clinical scientists
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to function proficiently in English

Director Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the development of an aspirational vision of the future research direction, goals and priorities of the KRCBS and Unity Health Toronto, and ensure alignment with the Unity Health mission and strategic priorities
  • Represent and advocate for the KRCBS scientists, staff and trainees’ interests at the Research Leadership table and within Unity Health Toronto, the University of Toronto, the Hospital Foundations, and externally.
  • Promote equity, diversity and inclusion principles across all areas of the research institute, including but not limited to hiring, promotions, retention, distribution of institutional support, and providing an anti-racist place of work.

Scientist Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be eligible for a benefits package which includes medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability insurance, group insurance, pension plan, vision care, and may be eligible for a relocation package and/or start-up fund as well space may be provided. The successful candidate will receive extra responsibility pay pertaining to the role of Director of the KRCBS as well as administrative support.
