Application Technical Specialist IT -Application

St. Michael's Hospital - Unity Health Toronto

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted October 6, 2020.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors and optimizes the performance of the databases.
  • Plans, develops, tests and manages database back-up and recovery procedures.
  • Installs and upgrades database server and application tools.
  • Database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata).
  • Communicates with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security.
  • Ensures compliance with database vendor license agreement.
  • Modifies the database structure, as necessary, from information given by application developers.
  • Liaises with programmers, applications/operational staff, IT project managers and other technical staff.
  • Responsible for vendor management.
  • Allocates system storage and plans future storage requirements for the database systems.
  • Coordinates provisioning of HW/SW and database components.
  • Participates in procurement and acquisition process.
  • Prepares comprehensive and accurate documentation regarding system configuration, specifications, and technical processes.
  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting of equipment, as required for server hardware, operating systems, networking and other systems.
  • Monitors and optimizes systems performance.
  • Interprets data, analyzes results and provides ongoing reports.
  • Develops and implements data reporting systems and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and data quality.
  • Acquires data from primary or secondary data sources and maintains databases/data systems.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and interprets trends or patterns in complex data sets.
  • Filters and “cleans” data, and reviews reports to locate and correct code problems.
  • Designs and programs reports to support business and clinical needs.
  • Performs complex data analysis to support day-to-day operations.
  • Participates in project related activities for new IM or corporate initiatives.
  • Initiates and performs capacity planning activities, to ensure infrastructure is scaled ahead of user/customer demands (e.g., CPU, SAN, or memory capacity).

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Business or other related field from an accredited post-secondary institution and/or 5+ years of equivalent experience.
  • Oracle DB certification preferred
  • MS SQL certification preferred
  • Solid administration understanding of Linux, MS Windows, Unix
  • Minimum five years of experience in application systems development and data/systems integration.
  • Knowledge of workflow concepts and ability to read workflow design documents.
  • Good logical and objective analytical skills and ability to use sound judgment when evaluating potential solutions.
  • Understanding of PHI policies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    Strong investigation, prioritization, and organization skills.
  • Good customer service and relationship management skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Expertise in JavaScript or equivalent scripting languages.
  • Working knowledge of clinical workflow processes is a definite asset
  • Experience and comfort working in a multi-disciplinary and high performance team environment, with colleagues representing technical, clinical and medical expertise
  • Excellent understanding of SQL
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Experience with an Enterprise Database Management System such as SQL Server and/or Oracle
  • Knowledgeable regarding Data Warehouse theory and application data structures.
