Senior Solution Designer (UML)

Canadian National Railway

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted November 3, 2020.

 Job Summary

The Specialist, Solution Design is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and documenting how applications interact together and share data. The incumbent is an expert in distributed applications and data exchange. The role collaborates with Business and I&T stakeholders to analyse user requirements, data and business rules to ideate and elaborate design options for how the particular application will function and access data. During delivery, the incumbent produces solutions for data exchange in terms of format, protocol, behavior, state, persistence, and performance. The position is also responsible for coming up with creative and innovative solutions and producing low-level design documentation to support the development, quality testing and sustainability of the application and access to its data.

Main Responsibilities Collaboration

  • Collaborate with internal clients such as Architects and Solution Integrators to understand the operational objectives and purpose of future applications

  • Collaborate with Data Designers and Developers in order to find best solutions

Solution Design

  • Understand the points of integration between different systems and highlight potential risks associated with delivery of solutions

  • Produce low level specifications

  • Assist in producing solutions with threat assessments and associated security awareness

  • Ensure that all solution elements have been considered and that the solutions adhere to the agreed upon architecture

  • Help improve the processes and methods of Software Engineering as a whole

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress.

Requirements Experience

Solution Design

  • Minimum 5 years of overall work experience

    • Experience in system design and business requirements gathering

    • Experience in 3-tier, n-tier, cloud computing, microservices architectures and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)

    • Experience with Application Programming Interface (API) concepts and technologies such as Representational State Transfer (REST), JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), Extensible Markup Language (XML), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Yet Another Markup Language (YAML), and Swagger

    • Experience with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) tools

    • Experience with Visio, Sparks, Confluence, and JIRA

    • Experience in integrating Systems, Applications and Products (SAP)*

    • Experience in software development*

*Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering

  • Ability to work with simultaneous projects in a changing environment using different methodologies (Waterfall and Agile)

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge in technical and functional specifications using flowcharting, sequence diagrams, or any other Unified Modeling Language (UML) pattern needed

  • Familiar with stream processors and message brokers

  • Familiar with API Management platforms such as Apigee*, WSO2, CA Layer 7, and Mashery

  • Understanding of Relational Database Management Systems (DBMS) and Structured Query Language (SQL)

  • Understanding of API First approach

  • Knowledge of In-Memory Database, Fast Data Layers and Development and Operations (DevOps) practices
